Covanta Energy

Explaining the benefits of Covanta’s energy-from-waste program was vital to its success. Brandlogic met the challenge, with a powerful end-to-end website redesign.

It’s not often that an industrial practice can produce multiple benefits for the environment. That’s exactly what Covanta Energy’s energy-from-waste plants do. This emerging technology converts trash into safe, clean energy, lessening impact on landfills while at the same time reducing dependence on fossil fuel. It’s actually carbon-negative – an almost unheard-of benefit. Covanta is a leader in the category, processing approximately 65 percent of the nation’s energy-from-waste volume.

Despite this leadership, Covanta – and the technology – remained relatively unknown. Seeing the need to better inform the public on the benefits, Covanta approached Brandlogic to refresh its corporate website in accordance with the company’s long-term Web and brand-building strategy.

The company wanted to make sure that visitors to the site could quickly understand what Covanta does. Along the way, they’d learn more about the benefits to the environment and to people.

The key was to explain a complex process to a broad audience that includes investors, employees, and unique customer groups – the last being a special challenge. Covanta needs to persuade government officials, community leaders, and the populace that each plant will be safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Led by senior partner Larry Roth, Brandlogic’s digital team worked closely with Covanta’s internal IT team and communications leaders to design and implement the new site. Using Covanta’s brand guidelines, Brandlogic created a compelling new look and feel, implementing it through a set of HTML templates that were integrated with Covanta’s existing content management system.

The result was a stunning new site that better reflects the Covanta brand. Usability tests show that users are able to more quickly and easily get the information they need.
